Douglas Fir

Date: 8th June 2022

Our alps are starting to get a good dusting of snow, it is quite chilly outside but this weather is not a problem for Douglas fir.

This tree pest has a storyline. The video below covers it’s migration to New Zealand. Douglas fir has thrived in our alpine environment even more so than its homeland.

It is one of Queenstown’s most problematic wilding pines. With the seeds being so light and in great numbers, any prevailing winds will carry them for many miles. The next time you look at an infestation in the basin, see if you can identify the upwind seed source.
