Neill Simpson, A long time Whakatipu Botanist / Ecologist / Conservationist’s perspective…
My introduction to wilding conifers was pulling pines on the southern flanks of Mt. Ruapehu with the Wanganui Tramping Club in the 1960’s, an annual trip that is still ongoing. Later it was exciting sitting on the skid of the Hiller helicopter with 3 other Rangers being dropped off with chainsaw in hand to remove scattered conifers on the eastern side of Tongariro National Park.
