I was a farmer in Southland and for family recreation we often visited the high country, four wheel drive touring, tramping and skiing, and this gave me a great appreciation of the scenic values in Southland and Central Otago.

I became aware of how serious the wilding tree problem was, about twenty-five years ago, hearing of the problems at Mid Dome where Pinus contorta, a tree originally planted to stabilise the land, had spread and was threatening the neighbouring pastoral high country, land that we were familiar with.
